What is the Hellen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB)?
“Mrs. Helen Ruffin, a dynamic and innovative Library Media Specialist at Sky Haven Elementary School in DeKalb County, created a unique reading competition in 1986. It was called The Reading Bowl and, in a competitive game format, questioned students about the content of the 20 Georgia Book Award Nominees each year. Her vision was to have teams, comprised of students from different schools, compete to test their knowledge of the selected books.”
What do I have to do?
The Shaw High Reading Bowl team spends the first semester of the school year reading 20 books set forth by the HRRB committee. The list can be found here: https://www.dekalbschoolsga.org/hrrb/booklists/. The Shaw High media center has multiple copies of all of the books available for check-out. The Columbus library also has copies of the books both digitally and physically to check out. We will be meeting after school once a week to discuss books and practice questions (day and time TBD). The first meeting will be announced via announcements, email, and the media center Canvas page.
How can I join?
If you are interested in joining the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team please email Ms. High (high.darby.c@muscogee.k12.ga.us) or Ms. Torres (Torres.Natasha.T@muscogee.k12.ga.us).

S2S FOR SHS!
Welcoming Committee for All New Transfer Students
Our Student 2 Student Club meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month after school! We are a student led club that focuses on integration and accommodation of new students into our school. S2S gives students a community of resources and friends that will help them become a more involved student throughout their new transition. We want everyone to feel welcomed to the Raider Family!
At our meetings, we discuss upcoming events, philanthropies, current issues, how orientations are going, and anything else that needs discussing. We also have snacks and play games.
S2S students are responsible for giving a tour to all our new arrival students, helping them find a lunch buddy/group, and checking up on them throughout their next few weeks.
We will also meet once a month with all the Military Students at our school to share important info, get acquainted, and socialize.
If you love making new friends and mentoring others, this is the club for you!! If you need ideas of what clubs or activities would best suit you, this is the club for you!
