This means that in addition to what counselors normally do in the way of crisis intervention or general personal contact with students and parents in the way of academic, career or social concerns, the guidance department offers academic, career and/or personal/social information and programming through the following formats: Welcome Back Orientation Program (Aug) This “Welcome-to-Kendrick High School” is offered in July or August for incoming ninth graders and their families and new students and their families. Students and parents are oriented to the school program and given an opportunity to meet administration and some faculty members. During this evening, students are oriented to clubs and activities, given a tour of the building and given an opportunity to follow their schedules and see where their classrooms and lockers are located. Kendrick High School Orientation Meetings (Sept) Orientation to the rules and social expectations as members of the Kendrick High School community are presented by the administration to all grade levels at the start of the school year. Individual Appointments as Requested (Throughout the year) All students are encouraged to make appointments with their guidance counselor as the need arises. Walk-ins are also permitted. This could be for a variety of reasons such as clarification on classes or schedule changes, dealing with friendship issues or coaching on how best to approach a teacher with a question or concern about a grade. Additions services include personal counseling, career counseling, assistance with college/career exploration, counseling on truancy, etc. If a student has an emergency any available counselor will see a student if the student’s own counselor is unavailable. Individual Appointments with Counselor (Sept – Nov) The guidance department schedules individual appointments for all students (all grade levels) during the first several months of the school year to review their transcripts and discuss graduation requirements. Counselors all ask the same set of questions (To be included in the student’s Individualized Learning Plan) hoping to get an early indication of each student’s academic, career and personal goals along with a casual format of getting to know the student better. . The senior counselor meets with students and their parents to discuss the student’s standing related to graduation and post-secondary plans. College and Career Center (ongoing) Our College and Career Center is an integral part of the guidance department making it more accessible to students for use on their own or with the assistance of a counselor. Available college search materials, career materials, SAT and ACT information and practice materials, military information, career and college related materials for students with disabilities and websites and computers to support all of the above. Parents are invited to utilize this space as well, if available. Parent Portal Parents are strongly encouraged to utilize the Parent Portal to regularly review students’ academic performance. Parents can pick up Parent Portal information from the Guidance Department. College Representative Visits Each fall a number of College Admissions Representatives come to Kendrick High School to provide information on their college and give a presentation to interested students. Many of the visits take place during cafeteria lunch time so that all grade levels can benefit from the information which is made available. In addition, some college representatives make arrangements to talk to seniors during their English or social studies class periods. College/Career Day Fair Annually, Kendrick High School’s Guidance Department sponsors a College/Career Day Fair for its seniors and juniors. Traditionally over 70 college and career institutions/agencies participate from Georgia and the surrounding states. Seniors and juniors are given the greater part of the day to rotate the different stations. Students can apply to colleges on site and/or qualify for scholarships if they meet the institution’s criteria. In addition, students learn the requirements of various careers and can apply on-site for some jobs. Senior Post High School Planning Meeting (Early Fall of Senior Year) Each fall the senior counselor meets with the senior class to bring attention to the college application process, timelines, deadlines, forms and encourage individual appointments with counselors as soon as possible to review college lists and/or alternate post high school plans. Pre-Registration (January-February) All grade level classes are presented an overview of the course selection process and yearly reminders of credits and other requirements towards graduation through the advisement process. Advisement lessons are developed by guidance counselors and routed to the advisors. Students are encouraged to make appointments with individual counselors if there are follow up questions or concerns with regards to their own particular schedule or graduation credits. Dual Enrollment Night Historically attracting mostly rising junior and senior parents, all parents and students are invited and encouraged to attend dual enrollment night. Representatives from the local colleges attend the meeting and provide an overview to parents on how their child/children can meet the criteria for dual enrollment at their institution. The criteria includes having a specified grade point average and standardized test score. Dual enrollment allows students to earn college credit while still in high school. Dual enrollment classes are paid for by the State of Georgia for students who meet the criteria. Individualized Learning Plan (ongoing) The guidance office along with other stakeholders in the school including advisors and teachers are collectively charged and in fact, mandated with helping all students monitor and accomplish components of an Individualized Learning Plan that is unique to each student. That should include any specific learning needs of the student, test scores, Literacy Plans and/or Personal Learning Plans for students who require them. That ILP should also include goal setting in the areas of Academics, Career and Social and the monitoring of the student towards meeting the graduation requirements. Some components of the ILP are housed currently in a student’s advisement folder which is maintained by the individual student’s advisor. Counselors maintain the student’s graduation plan so they can re-visit the plan with the student as often as is needed. Communication The guidance office continuously seeks to keep you informed of all activities that are sponsored by or related to the guidance office. College representative visits, upcoming college fairs, open houses on campuses, career speakers, career opportunities, upcoming state assessments, SATs, ACTs and/or any articles that are noteworthy to the parents of high school students are posted on the list serve and hopefully soon on this website. In addition, should you contact your student’s counselor every effort is made to return that call within 24 hours barring any extenuating circumstances beyond the counselor’s control.
